¹⁰When they were alone, the people who were around Jesus, with the Twelve, asked him about the parables.

¹¹“The mystery of God’s kingdom is given to you,” he replied, “but for the people outside it’s all in parables, ¹²so that ‘they may look and look but never see, and hear and hear but never understand; otherwise they would turn and be forgiven.’

¹⁰When he was alone, the Twelve and the others around him asked him about the parables. ¹¹He told them, “The secret of the kingdom of God^(A) has been given to you. But to those on the outside^(B) everything is said in parables ¹²so that,

“‘they may be ever seeing but never perceiving,
and ever hearing but never understanding;
otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!’^[a]”^(C)
