36 So they left the crowd and took Him along since He was already in the boat. And other boats were with Him. 37 A fierce windstorm(A) arose, and the waves(B) were breaking over the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. 38 But He was in the stern, sleeping(C) on the cushion. So they woke Him up(D) and said to Him, “Teacher! Don’t You care that we’re going to die?”(E)

39 He got up, rebuked(F) the wind, and said to the sea, “Silence!(G) Be still!” The wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 Then He said to them, “Why are you fearful?(H) Do you still have no faith?”

41 And they were terrified(I) and asked one another, “Who then is this? Even the wind and the sea obey(J) Him!”(K)

The Fifth Sign: Walking on Water

16 When(A) evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, 17 got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum.(B) Darkness had already set in, but Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 Then a high wind arose, and the sea began to churn. 19 After they had rowed about three or four miles,[a] they saw Jesus walking on the sea. He was coming near the boat, and they were afraid.

20 But He said to them, “It is I.[b](C) Don’t be afraid!” 21 Then they were willing to take Him on board, and at once the boat was at the shore where they were heading.
