Peter Declares His Faith in Jesus^(A)

²⁷ Then Jesus and his disciples set out for the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he was asking his disciples, “Who do people say I am?”

²⁸ They answered him, “Some say^[a] John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others one of the prophets.”

²⁹ Then he began to ask them, “But who do you say I am?”

Peter answered him, “You are the Messiah!”^{[b] 30} Jesus^[c] sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him.

¹⁸ One day, while Jesus^[a] was praying privately and the disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say I am?”

¹⁹ They answered, “Some say^[b] John the Baptist, others Elijah, and still others one of the ancient prophets who has come back to life.”

²⁰ He asked them, “But who do you say I am?”

“God’s Messiah,”^[c] Peter replied.
