33 They came to Capernaum and, once inside the house, he began to ask them, “What were you arguing about on the way?”(A) 34 But they remained silent. They had been discussing among themselves on the way who was the greatest. 35 Then he sat down, called the Twelve, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.”(B) 36 Taking a child he placed it in their midst, and putting his arms around it he said to them, 37 “Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me.”(C)

Another Exorcist.[a] 38 John said to him,(D) “Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow us.” 39 Jesus replied, “Do not prevent him. There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me. 40 For whoever is not against us is for us.(E) 41 Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward.(F)

Temptations to Sin. 42 (G)“Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe [in me] to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were put around his neck and he were thrown into the sea. 43 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed than with two hands to go into Gehenna,[b] into the unquenchable fire. [44 ][c] 45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life crippled than with two feet to be thrown into Gehenna. [46 ] 47 And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. Better for you to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into Gehenna, 48 where ‘their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.’(H)

The Simile of Salt. 49 [d]“Everyone will be salted with fire. 50 Salt is good, but if salt becomes insipid, with what will you restore its flavor? Keep salt in yourselves and you will have peace with one another.”(I)

  1. 9:38–41 Jesus warns against jealousy and intolerance toward others, such as exorcists who do not follow us. The saying in Mk 9:40 is a broad principle of the divine tolerance. Even the smallest courtesies shown to those who teach in Jesus’ name do not go unrewarded.
  2. 9:43, 45, 47 Gehenna: see note on Mt 5:22.
  3. 9:44, 46 These verses, lacking in some important early manuscripts, are here omitted as scribal additions. They simply repeat Mk 9:48 itself a modified citation of Is 66:24.
  4. 9:49 Everyone will be salted with fire: so the better manuscripts. Some add “every sacrifice will be salted with salt.” The purifying and preservative use of salt in food (Lv 2:13) and the refinement effected through fire refer here to comparable effects in the spiritual life of the disciples of Jesus.

33 They came to Capernaum.(A) When he was in the house,(B) he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?” 34 But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.(C)

35 Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”(D)

Whoever Is Not Against Us Is for Us(G)

38 “Teacher,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we told him to stop, because he was not one of us.”(H)

39 “Do not stop him,” Jesus said. “For no one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me, 40 for whoever is not against us is for us.(I) 41 Truly I tell you, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to the Messiah will certainly not lose their reward.(J)

Causing to Stumble

42 “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble,(K) it would be better for them if a large millstone were hung around their neck and they were thrown into the sea.(L) 43 If your hand causes you to stumble,(M) cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell,(N) where the fire never goes out.(O) [44] [a] 45 And if your foot causes you to stumble,(P) cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.(Q) [46] [b] 47 And if your eye causes you to stumble,(R) pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell,(S) 48 where

“‘the worms that eat them do not die,
and the fire is not quenched.’[c](T)

49 Everyone will be salted(U) with fire.

50 “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again?(V) Have salt among yourselves,(W) and be at peace with each other.”(X)
