The 12 Apostles

13 Then(A) He went up the mountain(B) and summoned those He wanted, and they came to Him. 14 He also appointed 12—He also named them apostles[a](C)—to be with Him, to send them out to preach,(D) 15 and to have authority to[b] drive out demons.

16 He appointed the Twelve:[c](E)

To Simon,(F) He gave the name Peter;(G)
17 and to James(H) the son of Zebedee,(I)
and to his brother John,(J)
He gave the name “Boanerges”
(that is, “Sons of Thunder”(K));
18 Andrew;(L)
Philip(M) and Bartholomew;
Matthew(N) and Thomas;(O)
James the son of Alphaeus,
and Thaddaeus;
Simon the Zealot,[d]
19 and Judas Iscariot,[e](P)
who also betrayed Him.

14 King(F) Herod(G) heard of this, because Jesus’ name(H) had become well known. Some[a] said, “John the Baptist(I) has been raised from the dead,(J) and that’s why supernatural powers(K) are at work(L) in him.” 15 But others said, “He’s Elijah.”(M) Still others said, “He’s a prophet[b]—like one of the prophets.”(N)

16 When Herod(O) heard of it, he said, “John,(P) the one I beheaded, has been raised!”(Q)
