⁴⁰ for just as ^(A)Jonah was in the stomach of the sea monster for three days and three nights, so will ^(B)the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth for ^(C)three days and three nights.

^9 (A)When they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, “^(B)Tell the vision to no one until ^(C)the Son of Man has ^(D)risen from the dead.”

¹² but I say to you that Elijah already came, and they did not recognize him, but did ^[a]to him whatever they wanted. So also ^(A)the Son of Man is going to suffer ^[b]at their hands.”

^22 (A)And while they were gathering together in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be ^[a]handed over to men; ²³ and ^(B)they will kill Him, and He will be raised on the third day.” And they were deeply grieved.

The Temple Tax

²⁴ Now when they came to Capernaum, those who collected ^(C)the ^[b]two-drachma tax came to Peter and said, “Does your teacher not pay ^(D)the ^[c]two-drachma tax?” ²⁵ He *said, “Yes.” And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth collect ^(E)customs or ^[d](F)poll-tax, from their sons or from strangers?” ²⁶ When Peter said, “From strangers,” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are ^[e]exempt. ²⁷ However, so that we do not ^(G)offend them, go to the sea and throw in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up; and when you open its mouth, you will find a ^[f]stater. Take that and give it to them for you and Me.”

¹⁸ “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man ^(A)will be ^[a]handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn Him to death, ¹⁹ and they ^(B)will hand Him over to the Gentiles to mock and flog and crucify, and on ^(C)the third day He will be raised up.”

Request for Preferred Treatment

^20 (D)Then the mother of ^(E)the ^[b]sons of Zebedee came to ^[c]Jesus with her sons, ^(F)bowing down and making a request of Him. ²¹ And He said to her, “What do you desire?” She *said to Him, “Say that in Your kingdom these two sons of mine ^(G)shall sit, one at Your right, and one at Your left.” ²² But Jesus replied, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able ^(H)to drink the cup that I am about to drink?” They *said to Him, “We are able.” ²³ He *said to them, “^(I)My cup you shall drink; but to sit at My right and at My left is not Mine to give, ^(J)but it is for those for whom it has been ^(K)prepared by My Father.”

²⁴ And after hearing this, the other ten disciples became indignant with the two brothers. ^25 (L)But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles domineer over them, and ^[d]those in high position exercise authority over them. ²⁶ It ^[e]is not this way among you, ^(M)but whoever wants to become ^[f]prominent among you shall be your servant, ²⁷ and whoever desires to be first among you shall be your slave; ²⁸ just as ^(N)the Son of Man ^(O)did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His ^[g]life as a ransom for many.”

Sight for Those Who Are Blind

^29 (P)As they were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed Him. ³⁰ And two people who were blind, sitting by the road, hearing that Jesus was passing by, cried out, “Lord, ^(Q)have mercy on us, ^(R)Son of David!” ³¹ But the crowd sternly warned them to be quiet; yet they cried out all the more, “Lord, ^(S)Son of David, have mercy on us!” ³² And Jesus stopped and called them, and said, “What do you want Me to do for you?” ³³ They *said to Him, “Lord, we want our eyes to be opened.” ³⁴ Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes; and immediately they regained their sight and followed Him.

⁶³ and they said, “Sir, we remember that when that deceiver was still alive, He said, ‘^(A)After three days I am rising.’

¹² And He said to them, “Elijah does come first and he restores all things. And yet how is it written of ^(A)the Son of Man that ^(B)He will suffer many things and be treated with contempt?

³¹ For He was teaching His disciples and telling them, “^(A)The Son of Man is to be ^[a]handed over to men, and they will kill Him; and when He has been killed, He will rise three days later.”

^25 (A)But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.
