Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife(A) for any and every reason?”

“Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’[a](B) and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’[b]?(C) So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

“Why then,” they asked, “did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?”(D)

Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”(E)

10 The disciples said to him, “If this is the situation between a husband and wife, it is better not to marry.”

11 Jesus replied, “Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given.(F) 12 For there are eunuchs who were born that way, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others—and there are those who choose to live like eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it.”

The Little Children and Jesus(G)

13 Then people brought little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them(H) and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked them.

14 Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs(I) to such as these.”(J) 15 When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there.

The Rich and the Kingdom of God(K)

16 Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life(L)?”(M)

17 “Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.”(N)

18 “Which ones?” he inquired.

Jesus replied, “‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery,(O) you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, 19 honor your father and mother,’[c](P) and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’[d](Q)

20 “All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?”

21 Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect,(R) go, sell your possessions and give to the poor,(S) and you will have treasure in heaven.(T) Then come, follow me.”

22 When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.

23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich(U) to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?”

26 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”(V)

27 Peter answered him, “We have left everything to follow you!(W) What then will there be for us?”

28 Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne,(X) you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.(Y) 29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife[e] or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.(Z) 30 But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.(AA)

The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?

And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,

And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?

Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?

He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.

And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.

10 His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.

11 But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given.

12 For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.

13 Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them.

14 But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.

15 And he laid his hands on them, and departed thence.

16 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?

17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,

19 Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

20 The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?

21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.

23 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.

24 And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

25 When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved?

26 But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

27 Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore?

28 And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

29 And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.

30 But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.

Jesus Teaches on Celibacy

11 But He said to them, (I)“All cannot accept this saying, but only those to whom it has been given: 12 For there are [c]eunuchs who were born thus from their mother’s womb, and (J)there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He who is able to accept it, let him accept it.”

Jesus Blesses Little Children(K)

13 (L)Then little children were brought to Him that He might put His hands on them and pray, but the disciples rebuked them. 14 But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for (M)of such is the kingdom of heaven.” 15 And He laid His hands on them and departed from there.

Jesus Counsels the Rich Young Ruler(N)

16 (O)Now behold, one came and said to Him, (P)“Good[d] Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?”

17 So He said to him, [e]“Why do you call Me good? [f]No one is (Q)good but One, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, (R)keep the commandments.”

18 He said to Him, “Which ones?”

Jesus said, (S)“‘You shall not murder,’ ‘You shall not commit adultery,’ ‘You shall not steal,’ ‘You shall not bear false witness,’ 19 (T)‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, (U)‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’

20 The young man said to Him, “All these things I have (V)kept [g]from my youth. What do I still lack?”

21 Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, (W)go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

With God All Things Are Possible(X)

23 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “Assuredly, I say to you that (Y)it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

25 When His disciples heard it, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?”

26 But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but (Z)with God all things are possible.”

27 Then Peter answered and said to Him, “See, (AA)we have left all and followed You. Therefore what shall we have?”

28 So Jesus said to them, “Assuredly I say to you, that in the regeneration, when the Son of Man sits on the throne of His glory, (AB)you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 (AC)And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother [h]or wife or children or [i]lands, for My name’s sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life. 30 (AD)But many who are first will be last, and the last first.

Some Pharisees came to [a]Jesus, testing Him and [b]asking, “(A)Is it lawful for a man to [c]divorce his wife for any reason at all?” And He answered and said, “Have you not read (B)that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘(C)For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife, and (D)the two shall become one flesh’? 10 The disciples *said to Him, “If the relationship of the man with his wife is like this, it is better not to marry.” 11 But He said to them, (G)Not all men can accept this statement, but (H)only those to whom it has been given. 12 For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mother’s womb; and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by people; and there are also eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who is able to accept this, let him accept it.”

Jesus Blesses Little Children

13 (I)Then some children were brought to Him so that He would lay His hands on them and pray; and the disciples rebuked them. 14 But Jesus said, [h](J)Leave the children alone, and do not [i]forbid them to come to Me; for (K)the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” 15 After laying His hands on them, He departed from there.

Jesus Predicts His Death a Third Time(A)

17 Now Jesus was going up to Jerusalem. On the way, he took the Twelve aside and said to them, 18 “We are going up to Jerusalem,(B) and the Son of Man(C) will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law.(D) They will condemn him to death 19 and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged(E) and crucified.(F) On the third day(G) he will be raised to life!”(H)

A Mother’s Request(I)

20 Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons(J) came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down,(K) asked a favor of him.

21 “What is it you want?” he asked.

She said, “Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.”(L)

22 “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said to them. “Can you drink the cup(M) I am going to drink?”

“We can,” they answered.

23 Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink from my cup,(N) but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father.”

24 When the ten heard about this, they were indignant(O) with the two brothers. 25 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,(P) 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man(Q) did not come to be served, but to serve,(R) and to give his life as a ransom(S) for many.”

Two Blind Men Receive Sight(T)

29 As Jesus and his disciples were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him. 30 Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was going by, they shouted, “Lord, Son of David,(U) have mercy on us!”

31 The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”

32 Jesus stopped and called them. “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.

33 “Lord,” they answered, “we want our sight.”

34 Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.

17 And Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said unto them,

18 Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death,

19 And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again.

20 Then came to him the mother of Zebedees children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him.

21 And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom.

22 But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.

23 And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.

24 And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren.

25 But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.

26 But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;

27 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:

28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

29 And as they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him.

30 And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David.

31 And the multitude rebuked them, because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David.

32 And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do unto you?

33 They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened.

34 So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.

Jesus Foretells His Death a Third Time

17 (A)And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside, and on the way he said to them, 18 “See, (B)we are going up to Jerusalem. Are you able (N)to drink the cup that I am to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.” 23 He said to them, (O)“You will drink (P)my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, (Q)but it is for those for whom it has been (R)prepared by my Father.” 24 And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers. 25 But Jesus called them to him and said, (S)“You know that the rulers of the Gentiles (T)lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 26 (U)It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant,[a] 27 and whoever would be first among you must be your slave,[b] 28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served but (V)to serve, and (W)to give his life as a ransom for (X)many.”

Jesus Heals Two Blind Men

29 (Y)And as they went out of Jericho, a great crowd followed him. 30 And behold, there were two blind men sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was passing by, they cried out, “Lord,[c] have mercy on us, (Z)Son of David!” 31 The crowd (AA)rebuked them, telling them to be silent, but they cried out all the more, “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!” 32 And stopping, Jesus called them and said, “What do you want me to do for you?” 33 They said to him, “Lord, let our eyes be opened.” 34 And Jesus in pity touched their eyes, and immediately they recovered their sight and followed him.

Death, Resurrection Foretold

17 (A)As Jesus was about to go up to Jerusalem, He took the twelve disciples aside by themselves, and on the road He said to them, 18 “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man (B)will be [a]handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn Him to death, 19 and they (C)will hand Him over to the Gentiles to mock and flog and crucify, and on (D)the third day He will be raised up.”

Request for Preferred Treatment

20 (E)Then the mother of (F)the [b]sons of Zebedee came to [c]Jesus with her sons, (G)bowing down and making a request of Him. 21 And He said to her, “What do you desire?” She *said to Him, “Say that in Your kingdom these two sons of mine (H)shall sit, one at Your right, and one at Your left.” 22 But Jesus replied, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able (I)to drink the cup that I am about to drink?” They *said to Him, “We are able.” 23 He *said to them, (J)My cup you shall drink; but to sit at My right and at My left is not Mine to give, (K)but it is for those for whom it has been (L)prepared by My Father.”

24 And after hearing this, the other ten disciples became indignant with the two brothers. 25 (M)But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles domineer over them, and [d]those in high position exercise authority over them. 26 It [e]is not this way among you, (N)but whoever wants to become [f]prominent among you shall be your servant, 27 and whoever desires to be first among you shall be your slave; 28 just as (O)the Son of Man (P)did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His [g]life as a ransom for many.”

Sight for Those Who Are Blind

29 (Q)As they were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed Him. 30 And two people who were blind, sitting by the road, hearing that Jesus was passing by, cried out, “Lord, (R)have mercy on us, (S)Son of David!” 31 But the crowd sternly warned them to be quiet; yet they cried out all the more, “Lord, (T)Son of David, have mercy on us!” 32 And Jesus stopped and called them, and said, “What do you want Me to do for you?” 33 They *said to Him, “Lord, we want our eyes to be opened.” 34 Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes; and immediately they regained their sight and followed Him.

Jesus Anointed at Bethany(A)(B)

While Jesus was in Bethany(C) in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table.

When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. “Why this waste?” they asked. “This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.”

10 Aware of this, Jesus said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 11 The poor you will always have with you,[a](D) but you will not always have me. 12 When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.(E) 13 Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”

But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste?

For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor.

10 When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me.

11 For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always.

12 For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial.

13 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her.

  1. Matthew 26:6 I.e., a nickname; the man no doubt was cured

Some Pharisees(A) came and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?”

“What did Moses command you?” he replied.

They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away.”(B)

“It was because your hearts were hard(C) that Moses wrote you this law,” Jesus replied. “But at the beginning of creation God ‘made them male and female.’[a](D) ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,[b] and the two will become one flesh.’[c](E) So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

10 When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. 11 He answered, “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her.(F) 12 And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.”(G)

The Little Children and Jesus(H)

13 People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. 14 When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.(I) 15 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.”(J) 16 And he took the children in his arms,(K) placed his hands on them and blessed them.

The Rich and the Kingdom of God(L)

17 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees(M) before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”(N)

18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.’[d](O)

20 “Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.”

21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor,(P) and you will have treasure in heaven.(Q) Then come, follow me.”(R)

22 At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.

23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich(S) to enter the kingdom of God!”

24 The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, “Children, how hard it is[e] to enter the kingdom of God!(T) 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”(U)

26 The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, “Who then can be saved?”

27 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”(V)

28 Then Peter spoke up, “We have left everything to follow you!”(W)

29 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel 30 will fail to receive a hundred times as much(X) in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—along with persecutions—and in the age to come(Y) eternal life.(Z) 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”(AA)

Jesus Predicts His Death a Third Time(AB)

32 They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, and the disciples were astonished, while those who followed were afraid. Again he took the Twelve(AC) aside and told them what was going to happen to him. 33 “We are going up to Jerusalem,”(AD) he said, “and the Son of Man(AE) will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law.(AF) They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, 34 who will mock him and spit on him, flog him(AG) and kill him.(AH) Three days later(AI) he will rise.”(AJ)

The Request of James and John(AK)

35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.”

36 “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.

37 They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.”(AL)

38 “You don’t know what you are asking,”(AM) Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup(AN) I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?”(AO)

39 “We can,” they answered.

Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with,(AP) 40 but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.”

41 When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John. 42 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,(AQ) 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve,(AR) and to give his life as a ransom for many.”(AS)

Blind Bartimaeus Receives His Sight(AT)

46 Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means “son of Timaeus”), was sitting by the roadside begging. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth,(AU) he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David,(AV) have mercy on me!”

48 Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.”

So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.” 50 Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.

51 “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him.

The blind man said, “Rabbi,(AW) I want to see.”

52 “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.”(AX) Immediately he received his sight and followed(AY) Jesus along the road.

And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him.

And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you?

And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away.

And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept.

But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.

For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife;

And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.

What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

10 And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter.

11 And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her.

12 And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery.

13 And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them.

14 But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.

15 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.

16 And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.

17 And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?

18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.

19 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.

20 And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth.

21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.

22 And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.

23 And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!

24 And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!

25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

26 And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, Who then can be saved?

27 And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.

28 Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee.

29 And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's,

30 But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.

31 But many that are first shall be last; and the last first.

32 And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus went before them: and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid. And he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what things should happen unto him,

33 Saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles:

34 And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again.

35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire.

36 And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you?

37 They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory.

38 But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?

39 And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized:

40 But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared.

41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be much displeased with James and John.

42 But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them.

43 But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister:

44 And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.

45 For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

46 And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging.

47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me.

48 And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou son of David, have mercy on me.

49 And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee.

50 And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus.

51 And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight.

52 And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.

17 (L)Now as He was going out on the road, one came running, knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I (M)do that I may inherit eternal life?”

18 So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, (N)God. 19 You know the commandments: (O)‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ ‘Do not defraud,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother.’

  7. Mark 10:52 Lit. saved you

And Pharisees came up and in order (A)to test him asked, (B)“Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” He answered them, “What did Moses command you?” They said, (C)“Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce and to send her away.” And Jesus said to them, “Because of your (D)hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. But (E)from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them (F)male and female.’ (G)‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife,[a] and (H)the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. (I)What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”

10 And in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. 11 And he said to them, (J)“Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her, 12 and (K)if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

Let the Children Come to Me

13 (L)And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples (M)rebuked them. 14 But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, (N)“Let the children come to me; (O)do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. 15 (P)Truly, I say to you, whoever does not (Q)receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” 16 And (R)he took them in his arms and blessed them, (S)laying his hands on them.

The Rich Young Man

17 (T)And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and (U)knelt before him and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to (V)inherit eternal life?” 18 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: (W)‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’” 20 And he said to him, “Teacher, (X)all these I have kept from my youth.” 21 And Jesus, (Y)looking at him, (Z)loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, (AA)sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have (AB)treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 22 (AC)Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

23 And Jesus (AD)looked around and said to his disciples, (AE)“How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter (AF)the kingdom of God!” 24 And the disciples (AG)were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, (AH)“Children, (AI)how difficult it is[b] to enter (AJ)the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter (AK)the kingdom of God.” 26 And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him,[c] “Then who can be saved?” 27 Jesus (AL)looked at them and said, (AM)“With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.” 28 Peter began to say to him, “See, (AN)we have left everything and followed you.” 29 Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, (AO)there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and (AP)for the gospel, 30 who will not receive a hundredfold (AQ)now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, (AR)with persecutions, and in (AS)the age to come eternal life. 31 But (AT)many who are first will be last, and the last first.”

Jesus Foretells His Death a Third Time

32 (AU)And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and (AV)Jesus was walking ahead of them. And (AW)they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. And taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him, 33 saying, “See, (AX)we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will (AY)condemn him to death and (AZ)deliver him over to the Gentiles. 34 And they will (BA)mock him and (BB)spit on him, and flog him and kill him. And (BC)after three days he will rise.”

The Request of James and John

35 (BD)And James and John, (BE)the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us (BF)whatever we ask of you.” 36 And he said to them, (BG)“What do you want me to do for you?” 37 And they said to him, “Grant us (BH)to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, (BI)in your glory.” 38 Jesus said to them, (BJ)“You do not know what you are asking. Are you able (BK)to drink the cup that I drink, or (BL)to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39 And they said to him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, (BM)“The cup that I drink (BN)you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, (BO)you will be baptized, 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, (BP)but it is for those for whom it has been (BQ)prepared.” 41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. 42 (BR)And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles (BS)lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 But (BT)it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant,[d] 44 and whoever would be first among you must be (BU)slave[e] of all. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but (BV)to serve, and (BW)to give his life as a ransom for (BX)many.”

Jesus Heals Blind Bartimaeus

46 (BY)And they came to Jericho. And (BZ)as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus, (CA)a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside. 47 And when he heard that it was (CB)Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 48 And many (CC)rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49 And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, (CD)“Take heart. Get up; he is calling you.” 50 And throwing off his (CE)cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. 51 And Jesus said to him, (CF)“What do you want me to do for you?” And the blind man said to him, (CG)“Rabbi, let me recover my sight.” 52 And Jesus said to him, “Go your way; (CH)your faith has (CI)made you well.” And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way.

And some Pharisees came up to Jesus, testing Him, and began questioning Him whether it was lawful for a man to [a]divorce his wife. And He answered and said to them, “What did Moses command you?” They said, “(A)Moses permitted a man to write a [b]certificate of divorce and [c]send his wife away.” But Jesus said to them, [d](B)Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. But (C)from the beginning of creation, God (D)created them male and female. (E)For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother[e], (F)and the two shall become one flesh; so they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, no person is to separate.”

10 And in the house the disciples again began questioning Him about this. 11 And He *said to them, (G)Whoever [f]divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her; 12 and (H)if she herself [g]divorces her husband and marries another man, she is committing adultery.”

Jesus Blesses Little Children

13 (I)And they were bringing children to Him so that He would touch them; but the disciples rebuked them. 14 But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and said to them, “Allow the children to come to Me; do not [h]forbid them, (J)for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15 Truly I say to you, (K)whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all.” 16 And He (L)took them in His arms and began blessing them, laying His hands on them.

The Rich Young Ruler

17 (M)As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and (N)knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do so that I may (O)inherit eternal life?” 18 But Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘(P)Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not give false testimony, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’” 20 And he said to Him, “Teacher, I have kept (Q)all these things from my youth.” 21 Looking at him, Jesus showed love to him and said to him, “One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have (R)treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” 22 But he [i]was deeply dismayed by [j]these words, and he went away grieving; for he was one who owned much property.

23 And Jesus, looking around, *said to His disciples, (S)How hard it will be for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!” 24 And the disciples (T)were amazed at His words. But Jesus responded again and *said to them, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25 (U)It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 And they were even more astonished, and said to Him, “[k]Then who can be saved?” 27 Looking at them, Jesus *said, (V)With people it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God.”

28 (W)Peter began to say to Him, “Behold, we have left everything and have followed You.” 29 Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, (X)there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for My sake and for the gospel’s sake, 30 [l]but that he will receive a hundred times as much now in [m]the present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along with persecutions; and in (Y)the age to come, eternal life. 31 But (Z)many who are first will be last, and the last, first.”

Jesus’ Sufferings Foretold

32 (AA)Now they were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking on ahead of them; and they (AB)were amazed, and those who followed were fearful. And again He took the twelve aside and began to tell them what was going to happen to Him, 33 saying, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and (AC)the Son of Man will be [n]handed over to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and will [o]hand Him over to the Gentiles. 34 And they will mock Him and (AD)spit on Him, and flog Him and kill Him; and three days later He will rise from the dead.”

35 [p](AE)James and John, the two sons of Zebedee, *came up to [q]Jesus, saying to Him, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask of You.” 36 And He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?” 37 They said to Him, “[r]Grant that we (AF)may sit, one on Your right and one on Your left, in Your glory.” 38 But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able (AG)to drink the cup that I drink, or (AH)to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39 They said to Him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink (AI)you shall drink; and you shall be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized. 40 But to sit on My right or on My left is not Mine to give; (AJ)but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”

41 (AK)Hearing this, the other ten began to feel indignant with [s]James and John. 42 Calling them to Himself, Jesus *said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles domineer over them; and their [t]people in high position exercise authority over them. 43 But it is not this way among you; (AL)rather, whoever wants to become [u]prominent among you shall be your servant; 44 and whoever wants to be first among you shall be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man (AM)did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His [v]life as a ransom for many.”

Bartimaeus Receives His Sight

46 (AN)Then they *came to Jericho. And later, (AO)as He was leaving Jericho with His disciples and a large crowd, a beggar who was blind named Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the road. 47 And when he heard that it was Jesus the (AP)Nazarene, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, (AQ)Son of David, have mercy on me!” 48 Many were sternly telling him to be quiet, but he kept crying out all the more, “(AR)Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49 And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him here.” So they *called the man who was blind, saying to him, “(AS)Take courage, stand up! He is calling for you.” 50 And throwing off his cloak, he jumped up and came to Jesus. 51 And replying to him, Jesus said, “What do you want Me to do for you?” And the man who was blind said to Him, “[w](AT)Rabboni, I want to regain my sight!” 52 And Jesus said to him, “Go; (AU)your faith has [x]made you well.” And immediately he regained his sight and began following Him on the road.

And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head.

And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made?

For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her.

And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me.

For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always.

She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying.

Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.

The Anointing at Bethany(A)

(B)And being in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, as He sat at the table, a woman came having an alabaster flask of very costly [a]oil of spikenard. For it might have been sold for more than three hundred (C)denarii and given to the poor.” And they (D)criticized[b] her sharply.

But Jesus said, “Let her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a good work for Me. Jesus Anointed at Bethany

(A)And while he was at (B)Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,[a] as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head. There were some who said to themselves indignantly, “Why was the ointment wasted like that? For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii[b] and (C)given to the poor.” And they (D)scolded her. But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. For (E)you always have the poor with you, and whenever (F)you want, you can do good for them. But (G)you will not always have me. (H)She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand (I)for burial.
