Matthew 26:23-25 Lexham English Bible (LEB)

23 And he answered and[a] said, “The one who dips his[b] hand in the bowl with me—this one will betray me. 24 The Son of Man is going just as it is written about him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for him if that man had not been born.” 25 And Judas, the one who was betraying him, answered and[c] said, “Surely I am not he, am I,[d] Rabbi?” He said to him, “You have said it.”[e]

Footnotes:

  2. Matthew 26:23 Literally “the”; the Greek article is used here as a possessive pronoun
  3. Matthew 26:25 Here “and” is supplied because the previous participle (“answered”) has been translated as a finite verb
  4. Matthew 26:25 Literally “surely I am not”; the negative construction in Greek anticipates a negative answer here, indicated in the translation by “am I”
  5. Matthew 26:25 *Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation

23 Jesus replied, “The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. 24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”

25 Then Judas, the one who would betray him, said, “Surely you don’t mean me, Rabbi?”

Jesus answered, “You have said so.”
