^57 (A)When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph, who was himself a disciple of Jesus.^{(B) 58} He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus; then Pilate ordered it to be handed over. ⁵⁹ Taking the body, Joseph wrapped it [in] clean linen ⁶⁰ and laid it in his new tomb that he had hewn in the rock. Then he rolled a huge stone across the entrance to the tomb and departed.

The Burial of Jesus. ^42 (A)When it was already evening, since it was the day of preparation, the day before the sabbath, ⁴³ Joseph of Arimathea,^[a] a distinguished member of the council, who was himself awaiting the kingdom of God, came and courageously went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. ⁴⁴ Pilate was amazed that he was already dead. He summoned the centurion and asked him if Jesus had already died. ⁴⁵ And when he learned of it from the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph. ⁴⁶ Having bought a linen cloth, he took him down, wrapped him in the linen cloth and laid him in a tomb that had been hewn out of the rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance to the tomb.

⁴⁶ Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit”; and when he had said this he breathed his last.^{(A) 47} The centurion who witnessed what had happened glorified God and said, “This man was innocent^[a] beyond doubt.” ⁴⁸ When all the people who had gathered for this spectacle saw what had happened, they returned home beating their breasts;^{(B) 49} but all his acquaintances stood at a distance, including the women who had followed him from Galilee and saw these events.^(C)
