3 In those days John the Baptist came,^(A) preaching in the wilderness of Judea^(B)

⁴ John came baptizing^[a](A) in the wilderness^(B) and proclaiming a baptism of repentance^(C) for the forgiveness^(D) of sins.^(E)

³ He went into all the vicinity of the Jordan,^(A) proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins,^(B)

²² beginning from the baptism of John until the day he was taken up from us—from among these, it is necessary that one become a witness with us of his resurrection.”^(A)

⁴ Paul said, “John baptized with a baptism of repentance,^(A) telling the people that they should believe in the one who would come after him, that is, in Jesus.”^(B)
