Matthew 5:15-17 The Passion Translation (TPT)

15 And who would light a lamp and then hide it in an obscure place?[a] Instead, it’s placed where everyone in the house can benefit from its light. 16 So don’t hide your light![b] Let it shine brightly before others, so that the commendable things you do will shine as light upon them, and then they will give their praise to your Father in heaven.”

Fulfillment of the Law

17 “If you think I’ve come to set aside the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets, you’re mistaken. I have come to fulfill and bring to perfection all that has been written.

Footnotes:

  1. Matthew 5:15 Or “under a basket.”
  2. Matthew 5:16 The Aramaic word for “light” (noohra) is often used as a metaphor for teachings that bring enlightenment and revelation into the hearts of men. Light can also represent the presence of God (“the light of his countenance”). Jesus is the light of God within us.

Matthew 5:15-17 New International Version (NIV)

15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

The Fulfillment of the Law

17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
