^3 (A)Philip and ^[a]Bartholomew; ^(B)Thomas and ^(C)Matthew the tax collector; ^[b](D)James the son of Alphaeus, and ^(E)Thaddaeus;

⁴⁴ Now ^(A)Philip was from ^(B)Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. ^45 (C)Philip *found ^(D)Nathanael and *said to him, “We have found Him of whom ^(E)Moses wrote in the Law, and ^(F)the prophets also wrote: Jesus ^(G)the son of Joseph, from ^(H)Nazareth!” ⁴⁶ Nathanael said to him, “^(I)Can anything good be from Nazareth?” ^(J)Philip *said to him, “Come and see.” ⁴⁷ Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and *said of him, “Here is truly an ^(K)Israelite, in whom there is no deceit!” ⁴⁸ Nathanael *said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before ^(L)Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”

⁵ So Jesus, after raising His eyes and seeing that a large crowd was coming to Him, *said to ^(A)Philip, “Where are we to buy bread so that these people may eat?”

^7 (A)Philip answered Him, “^(B)Two hundred ^[a]denarii worth of bread is not enough for them, for each to receive just a little!”

²¹ these people then came to ^(A)Philip, who was from ^(B)Bethsaida of Galilee, and were making a request of him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” ²² Philip *came and *told ^(C)Andrew; then Andrew and Philip *came and *told Jesus. ²³ But Jesus *answered them by saying, “^(D)The hour has come for the Son of Man to ^(E)be glorified. ²⁴ Truly, truly I say to you, ^(F)unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. ^25 (G)The one who loves his ^[a]life loses it, and the one who ^(H)hates his ^[b]life in this world will keep it ^[c]to eternal life. ²⁶ If anyone ^[d]serves Me, he must follow Me; and ^(I)where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone ^[e]serves Me, the Father will ^(J)honor him.

Jesus Foretells His Death

²⁷ “^(K)Now My soul has become troubled; and what am I to say? ‘^(L)Father, save Me from ^(M)this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. ^28 (N)Father, glorify Your name.” Then a ^(O)voice came out of heaven: “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.” ²⁹ So the crowd who stood by and heard it were saying that it had thundered; others were saying, “^(P)An angel has spoken to Him!” ³⁰ Jesus responded and said, “^(Q)This voice has not come for My sake, but for yours. ^31 (R)Now judgment is upon this world; now ^(S)the ruler of this world will be cast out. ³² And I, if I ^(T)am lifted up from the earth, will ^(U)draw all people to Myself.” ³³ Now He was saying this ^(V)to indicate what kind of death He was going to die. ³⁴ The crowd then answered Him, “We have heard from ^(W)the Law that ^(X)the ^[f]Christ is to remain forever; and how is it that You say, ‘The ^(Y)Son of Man must be ^(Z)lifted up’? Who is this ^(AA)Son of Man?” ³⁵ So Jesus said to them, “^(AB)For a little while longer ^(AC)the Light is among you. ^(AD)Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you; also, the one who ^(AE)walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. ³⁶ While you have the Light, ^(AF)believe in the Light, so that you may become ^(AG)sons of Light.”

These things Jesus proclaimed, and He went away and ^(AH)hid Himself from them. ³⁷ But though He had performed so many ^[g]signs in their sight, they still were not believing in Him. ³⁸ This happened so that the word of Isaiah the prophet which he spoke would be fulfilled: “^(AI)Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” ³⁹ For this reason they could not believe, for Isaiah said again, ⁴⁰ “^(AJ)He has blinded their eyes and He ^(AK)hardened their heart, so that they will not see with their eyes and understand with their heart, and ^[h]be converted, and so I will not heal them.” ⁴¹ These things Isaiah said because ^(AL)he saw His glory, and ^(AM)he spoke about Him. ⁴² Nevertheless ^(AN)many, even of ^(AO)the rulers, believed in Him, but ^(AP)because of the Pharisees they were not confessing Him, so that they would not be ^(AQ)excommunicated from the synagogue; ^43 (AR)for they loved the ^[i]approval of people rather than the ^[j]approval of God.

⁴⁴ Now Jesus cried out and said, “^(AS)The one who believes in Me, does not believe only in Me, but also in Him who sent Me. ⁴⁵ And ^(AT)the one who sees Me sees Him who sent Me. ^46 (AU)I have come as Light into the world, so that no one who believes in Me will remain in darkness. ⁴⁷ If anyone hears My ^[k]teachings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for ^(AV)I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. ^48 (AW)The one who rejects Me and does not ^[l]accept My ^[m]teachings has one who judges him: ^(AX)the word which I spoke. That will judge him on ^(AY)the last day. ^49 (AZ)For I did not speak ^[n]on My own, but the Father Himself who sent Me ^(BA)has given Me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak. ⁵⁰ And I know that ^(BB)His commandment is eternal life; therefore the things I speak, I speak ^(BC)just as the Father has told Me.”

^8 (A)Philip *said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” ⁹ Jesus *said to him, “Have I been with ^[a]you for so long a time, and yet ^[b]you have not come to know Me, Philip? ^(B)The one who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? ¹⁰ Do you not believe that ^(C)I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? ^(D)The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own, but the Father, as He remains in Me, does His works. ¹¹ Believe Me that ^(E)I am in the Father and the Father is in Me; otherwise ^(F)believe because of the works themselves. ¹² Truly, truly I say to you, the one who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and ^(G)greater works than these he will do; because ^(H)I am going to the Father. ¹³ And ^(I)whatever you ask in My name, this I will do, so that ^(J)the Father may be glorified in the Son. ¹⁴ If you ask Me anything ^(K)in My name, I will do it.

¹⁵ “^(L)If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.

The Holy Spirit

¹⁶ I will ask the Father, and He will give you another ^[c](M)Helper, so that He may be with you forever; ¹⁷ the Helper is ^(N)the Spirit of truth, ^(O)whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him; but you know Him because He remains with you and will be in you.

¹⁸ “I will not leave you as orphans; ^(P)I am coming to you. ^19 [d](Q)After a little while, ^(R)the world no longer is going to see Me, but you are going to see Me; ^(S)because I live, you also will live. ^20 (T)On that day you will know that ^(U)I am in My Father, and you are in Me, and I in you. ^21 (V)The one who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and ^(W)the one who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will ^(X)reveal Myself to him.” ^22 (Y)Judas (not Iscariot) *said to Him, “Lord, what has happened ^(Z)that You are going to reveal Yourself to us and not to the world?” ²³ Jesus answered and said to him, “^(AA)If anyone loves Me, he will ^(AB)follow My word; and ^(AC)My Father will love him, and We ^(AD)will come to him and make Our dwelling with him. ²⁴ The one who does not love Me ^(AE)does not follow My words; and ^(AF)the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.

²⁵ “These things I have spoken to you while remaining with you. ²⁶ But the ^(AG)Helper, the Holy Spirit ^(AH)whom the Father will send in My name, ^(AI)He will teach you all things, and ^(AJ)remind you of all that I said to you. ^27 (AK)Peace I leave you, My peace I give you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. ^(AL)[e]Do not let your hearts be troubled, nor ^[f]fearful. ^28 (AM)You heard that I said to you, ‘I am going away, and ^(AN)I am coming to you.’ If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced ^[g]because ^(AO)I am going to the Father, for ^(AP)the Father is greater than I. ²⁹ And now ^(AQ)I have told you before it happens, so that when it happens, you may believe. ³⁰ I will not speak much more with you, for ^(AR)the ruler of the world is coming, and he has ^[h]nothing in regard to Me, ³¹ but so that the world may know that I love the Father, ^[i]I do exactly as ^(AS)the Father commanded Me.
