Jesus is Buried^(A)

⁵⁷ Later that evening, a rich man arrived from Arimathea. His name was Joseph, and he had become a disciple of Jesus. ⁵⁸ He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus, and Pilate ordered it to be done. ⁵⁹ So Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth. ⁶⁰ Then he placed it in his own new tomb, which he had cut out of the rock. After rolling a large stone across the door of the tomb, he left, ⁶¹ but Mary Magdalene^[a] and the other Mary remained there, sitting in front of the tomb.

⁴² It was the Day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath. Since it was already evening, ⁴³ Joseph of Arimathea, a highly respected member of the Council,^[a] who was waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. ⁴⁴ Pilate was amazed to hear^[b] that Jesus^[c] had already died, so he summoned the centurion to ask him if he was in fact dead. ⁴⁵ When he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he let Joseph have the corpse. ⁴⁶ Joseph^[d] bought some linen cloth, took the body^[e] down, wrapped it in the cloth, laid it in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. ⁴⁷ Now Mary Magdalene^[f] and Mary the mother of Joseph observed where the body^[g] had been laid.

⁵⁰ Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council,^[a] a good and righteous man— ⁵¹ he had not voted for their plan and action—from the Jewish town of Arimathea; and he was waiting for the kingdom of God. ⁵² He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. ⁵³ Then he took it down, wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid it in a tomb cut in the rock, in which no one had yet been laid.

⁵⁴ It was the Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was just beginning. ⁵⁵ So the women who had come with Jesus^[b] from Galilee, following close behind, saw the tomb and how his body was laid. ⁵⁶ Then they went back and prepared spices and perfumes, and on the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.
