How to Fast

¹⁶ “Whenever you fast, don’t be gloomy like the hypocrites. For they disfigure their faces ^(A) so that their fasting is obvious to people. Truly I tell you, they have their reward.

²⁵ And whenever you stand^(A) praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive^(B) him, so that your Father^(C) in heaven^(D) will also forgive^(E) you your wrongdoing.”^[a]

Woe to the Self-Satisfied

¹¹ The Pharisee was standing^(A) and praying like this about himself: ^[a] ‘God, I thank you that I’m not like other people—greedy,^(B) unrighteous,^(C) adulterers,^(D) or even like this tax collector.
