²¹ “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord!’ will enter the kingdom of heaven,^(A) but only the one who does the will^(B) of My Father in heaven.^(C)

³⁴ “I give you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you must also love one another. ³⁵ By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love^(A) for one another.”

¹² This is My command: Love one another as I have loved^(A) you. ¹³ No one has greater love than this, that someone would lay down his life^(B) for his friends. ¹⁴ You are My friends if you do what I command you. ¹⁵ I do not call you slaves anymore, because a slave doesn’t know what his master^[a](C) is doing. I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything I have heard from My Father. ¹⁶ You did not choose Me, but I chose you.^(D) I appointed you that you should go out and produce fruit and that your fruit should remain, so that whatever you ask^(E) the Father in My name,^(F) He will give you.^{(G) 17} This is what I command you: Love one another.

²² But^(A) be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. ²³ Because if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man looking at his own face^[a] in a mirror. ²⁴ For he looks at himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. ²⁵ But the one who looks intently into the perfect law of freedom and perseveres in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but one who does good works—this person will be blessed in what he does.^(B)

Faith and Works

¹⁴ What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can his faith^[a] save him?

¹⁵ If a brother or sister is without clothes and lacks daily food ¹⁶ and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well,” but you don’t give them what the body needs, what good is it?^{(A) 17} In the same way faith, if it doesn’t have works, is dead by itself.
