6-8 Make sure they are allocated according to the size of the territory that each group has. The biggest families will give the greatest number of towns; the smaller tribes only a few. Included among the Levites’ towns, 48 in total, shall be the six cities of refuge to where a person who killed someone by accident can run for safety from revenge, along with 42 other cities.

Outside the town, measure two thousand cubits[a](A) on the east side, two thousand on the south side, two thousand on the west and two thousand on the north, with the town in the center. They will have this area as pastureland for the towns.(B)

“Six of the towns you give the Levites will be cities of refuge, to which a person who has killed someone may flee.(D) In addition, give them forty-two other towns. In all you must give the Levites forty-eight towns, together with their pasturelands.
