25 A foolish son is a grief to his father,
And bitterness to her that bare him.
26 Also to [a]punish the righteous is not good,
Nor to smite the noble for their uprightness.
27 He [b]that spareth his words hath knowledge;
And he that is of a cool spirit is a man of understanding.

    and bitterness to the mother who bore him.(A)

26 If imposing a fine on the innocent is not good,(B)
    surely to flog honest officials is not right.

27 The one who has knowledge uses words with restraint,(C)
    and whoever has understanding is even-tempered.(D)
