Psalm 39:4-6 Easy-to-Read Version (ERV)

Lord, tell me, what will happen to me now?
    Tell me, how long will I live?
    Let me know how short my life really is.
You gave me only a short life.
    Compared to you, my whole life is nothing.
The life of every human is like a cloud that quickly disappears. Selah

Our life is like an image in a mirror.[a]
    We rush through life collecting things,
    but we don’t know who will get them after we die.

Footnotes:

  1. Psalm 39:6 Our life … mirror Or “This life is not real—it is only a shadow” or “People wander around in the dark—not knowing what will happen.”

Psalm 39:4-6 New International Version (NIV)

“Show me, Lord, my life’s end
    and the number of my days;
    let me know how fleeting my life is.
You have made my days a mere handbreadth;
    the span of my years is as nothing before you.
Everyone is but a breath,
    even those who seem secure.[a]

“Surely everyone goes around like a mere phantom;
    in vain they rush about, heaping up wealth
    without knowing whose it will finally be.

Footnotes:

  1. Psalm 39:5 The Hebrew has Selah (a word of uncertain meaning) here and at the end of verse 11.
