Are by no means least among the leaders of Judah;
For from you will come forth a Ruler
Who will (C)shepherd My people Israel.’”
7 Then Herod secretly called for the magi and determined from them the exact [c]time (D)the star appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the Child; and when you have found Him, report to me, so that I too may come and worship Him.” 9 After hearing the king, they went on their way; and behold, the star, which they had seen in the east, went on ahead of them until it came to a stop over the place where the Child was to be found. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And after they came into the house, they saw the Child with (E)His mother Mary; and they fell down and [d](F)worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasures and presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And after being (G)warned by God (H)in a dream not to return to Herod, the magi left for their own country by another way.
The Escape to Egypt
13 Now when they had gone, behold, an (I)angel of the Lord *(J)appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to kill Him.”
14 So [e]Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother while it was still night, and left for Egypt. 15 He [f]stayed there until the death of Herod; this happened so that what had been spoken by the Lord through [g]the prophet would be fulfilled: “(K)Out of Egypt I called (L)My Son.”
Herod Slaughters Babies
16 Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by (M)the magi, he became very enraged, and sent men and (N)killed all the boys who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity [h]who were two years old or under, according to the time which he had determined from the magi. 17 Then what had been spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:
18 “(O)A voice was heard in Ramah,
Weeping and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children;
And she refused to be comforted,
Because they were no more.”
19 But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord *(P)appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, and said, 20 “Get up, take the Child and His mother, and go to the land of Israel; for those who sought the Child’s life are dead.” 21 So [i]Joseph got up, took the Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Then after being (Q)warned by God in a dream, he left for the regions of Galilee, 23 and came and settled in a city called (R)Nazareth. This happened so that what was spoken through the prophets would be fulfilled: “He will be called a (S)Nazarene.”

5 “In Bethlehem(A) in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written:
6 “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for out of you will come a ruler
who will shepherd my people Israel.’[a]”(B)
7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”
9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him.(C) Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts(D) of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned(E) in a dream(F) not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
The Escape to Egypt
13 When they had gone, an angel(G) of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream.(H) “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”(I)
14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled(J) what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”[b](K)
16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:(L)
18 “A voice is heard in Ramah,
weeping and great mourning,
Rachel(M) weeping for her children
and refusing to be comforted,
because they are no more.”[c](N)
The Return to Nazareth
19 After Herod died, an angel(O) of the Lord appeared in a dream(P) to Joseph in Egypt 20 and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.”(Q)
21 So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream,(R) he withdrew to the district of Galilee,(S) 23 and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth.(T) So was fulfilled(U) what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.(V)

4 Now Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because (A)he was of the house and family of David, 5 in order to register along with Mary, who was [a]betrothed to him, and was pregnant. 6 While they were there, the [b]time came for her to give birth. 7 And she (B)gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a [c]manger, because there was no [d]room for them in the inn.
8 In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock at night. 9 And (C)an angel of the Lord suddenly (D)stood near them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. 10 And so the angel said to them, “(E)Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; 11 for today in the city of David there has been born for you a (F)Savior, who is [e](G)Christ (H)the Lord. 12 And (I)this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a [f]manger.” 13 And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly [g]army of angels praising God and saying,

Jesus Presented at the Temple
21 And when (N)eight days were completed [j]so that it was time for His circumcision, (O)He was also named Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.
22 (P)And when the days for [k]their purification according to the Law of Moses were completed, they brought Him up to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord: “(Q)Every firstborn male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”), 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what has been stated in the Law of the Lord: “(R)A pair of turtledoves or two young doves.”
25 And there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; and this man was (S)righteous and devout, (T)looking forward to the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And (U)it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not (V)see death before he had seen the Lord’s [l]Christ. 27 And he came [m]by the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, [n](W)to carry out for Him the custom of the Law, 28 then he took Him in his arms, and blessed God, and said,
29 “Now, Lord, You are letting Your bond-servant depart in peace,

30 For my eyes have (Y)seen Your salvation,
31 Which You have prepared in the presence of all the peoples:

And the glory of Your people Israel.”
33 And His father and (AA)mother were amazed at the things which were being said about Him. 34 And Simeon blessed them and said to (AB)His mother Mary, “Behold, this Child is appointed for (AC)the fall and [p]rise of many in Israel, and as a sign to be [q]opposed— 35 and a sword will pierce your own soul—to the end that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”
36 And there was a (AD)prophetess, [r]Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of (AE)the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in [s]years (AF)and had lived with her husband for seven years after her [t]marriage, 37 and then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She did not leave the temple grounds, serving night and day with (AG)fasts and prayers. 38 And at that very [u]moment she came up and began giving thanks to God, and continued to speak about Him to all those who were (AH)looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.
Return to Nazareth
39 And when His parents had completed everything in accordance with the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to (AI)their own city of Nazareth. 40 (AJ)Now the Child continued to grow and to become strong, [v]increasing in wisdom; and the favor of God was upon Him.
Visit to Jerusalem
41 His parents went to Jerusalem every year at (AK)the Feast of the Passover. 42 And when He was twelve years old, they went up there according to the custom of the feast; 43 and as they were returning, after spending the (AL)full number of days required, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but His parents were unaware of it. 44 Instead, they thought that He was somewhere in the caravan, and they went a day’s journey; and then they began looking for Him among their relatives and acquaintances. 45 And when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, looking for Him. 46 Then, after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard Him (AM)were amazed at His understanding and His answers. 48 When Joseph and Mary saw Him, they were bewildered; and (AN)His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You treated us this way? Behold, (AO)Your father and I have been anxiously looking for You!” 49 And He said to them, “Why is it that you were looking for Me? Did you not know that (AP)I had to be in My Father’s [w]house?” 50 And yet (AQ)they on their part did not understand the statement which He had [x]made to them. 51 And He went down with them and came to (AR)Nazareth, and He continued to be subject to them; and (AS)His mother (AT)treasured all these [y]things in her heart.

4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem(A) the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him(B) and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.
8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel(C) of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid.(D) I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior(E) has been born to you; he is the Messiah,(F) the Lord.(G) 12 This will be a sign(H) to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace(I) to those on whom his favor rests.”
15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.(J) 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.(K) 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God(L) for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.
21 On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child,(M) he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived.(N)
Jesus Presented in the Temple
22 When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses,(O) Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”[a]),(P) 24 and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.”[b](Q)
25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout.(R) He was waiting for the consolation of Israel,(S) and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required,(T) 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:
29 “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,(U)
you may now dismiss[c] your servant in peace.(V)
30 For my eyes have seen your salvation,(W)
31 which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and the glory of your people Israel.”(X)
33 The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother:(Y) “This child is destined to cause the falling(Z) and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”
36 There was also a prophet,(AA) Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37 and then was a widow until she was eighty-four.[d](AB) She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying.(AC) 38 Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.(AD)
39 When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth.(AE) 40 And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him.(AF)
The Boy Jesus at the Temple
41 Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover.(AG) 42 When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom. 43 After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. 44 Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. 45 When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 Everyone who heard him was amazed(AH) at his understanding and his answers. 48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother(AI) said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father(AJ) and I have been anxiously searching for you.”
49 “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”[e](AK) 50 But they did not understand what he was saying to them.(AL)
51 Then he went down to Nazareth with them(AM) and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.(AN) 52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.(AO)
