8 I looked, and behold, [a]an (A)ashen horse; and the one who sat on it had the name (B)Death, and (C)Hades was following with him. Authority was given to them over a fourth of the earth, (D)to kill with sword, and famine, and [b]plague, and by the wild animals of the earth.

8 I looked, and there before me was a pale horse!(A) Its rider was named Death, and Hades(B) was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.(C)
9 When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under(D) the altar(E) the souls of those who had been slain(F) because of the word of God(G) and the testimony they had maintained. 10 They called out in a loud voice, “How long,(H) Sovereign Lord,(I) holy and true,(J) until you judge the inhabitants of the earth(K) and avenge our blood?”(L)

9 And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:
10 And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?
