⁸ Prayer with fasting is good. Almsgiving with righteousness is better than wealth with wickedness. It is better to give alms than to store up gold,^{(A) 9} for almsgiving saves from death, and purges all sin. Those who give alms will enjoy a full life,^{(B) 10} but those who commit sin and do evil are their own worst enemies.

^7 (A)If one of your kindred is in need in any community in the land which the Lord, your God, is giving you, you shall not harden your heart nor close your hand against your kin who is in need. ⁸ Instead, you shall freely open your hand and generously lend what suffices to meet that need.^(B)

¹¹ The land will never lack for needy persons; that is why I command you: “Open your hand freely to your poor and to your needy kin in your land.”^(A)

Chapter 4

¹³ Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind;

¹⁷ If someone who has worldly means sees a brother in need and refuses him compassion, how can the love of God remain in him?^(A)
