The Portion of Aaron and His Sons

²⁸ Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ²⁹ “Speak to the children of Israel, saying: ^(A)‘He who offers the sacrifice of his peace offering to the Lord shall bring his offering to the Lord from the sacrifice of his peace offering. ^30 (B)His own hands shall bring the offerings made by fire to the Lord. The fat with the breast he shall bring, that the ^(C)breast may be waved as a wave offering before the Lord. ^31 (D)And the priest shall burn the fat on the altar, but the ^(E)breast shall be Aaron’s and his sons’. ^32 (F)Also the right thigh you shall give to the priest as a heave offering from the sacrifices of your peace offerings. ³³ He among the sons of Aaron, who offers the blood of the peace offering and the fat, shall have the right thigh for his part. ³⁴ For ^(G)the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the heave offering I have taken from the children of Israel, from the sacrifices of their peace offerings, and I have given them to Aaron the priest and to his sons from the children of Israel by a statute forever.’ ”

³⁵ This is the consecrated portion for Aaron and his sons, from the offerings made by fire to the Lord, on the day when Moses presented them to ^[a]minister to the Lord as priests. ³⁶ The Lord commanded this to be given to them by the children of Israel, ^(H)on the day that He anointed them, by a statute forever throughout their generations.

³⁷ This is the law ^(I)of the burnt offering, ^(J)the grain offering, ^(K)the sin offering, ^(L)the trespass offering, ^(M)the consecrations, and ^(N)the sacrifice of the peace offering, ³⁸ which the Lord commanded Moses on Mount Sinai, on the day when He commanded the children of Israel ^(O)to offer their offerings to the Lord in the Wilderness of Sinai.

Aaron and His Sons Consecrated^(P)

8 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: ^2 (Q)“Take Aaron and his sons with him, and ^(R)the garments, ^(S)the anointing oil, a ^(T)bull as the sin offering, two ^(U)rams, and a basket of unleavened bread; ³ and gather all the congregation together at the door of the tabernacle of meeting.”

⁴ So Moses did as the Lord commanded him. And the congregation was gathered together at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. ⁵ And Moses said to the congregation, “This is what the Lord commanded to be done.”

⁶ Then Moses brought Aaron and his sons and ^(V)washed them with water. ⁷ And he ^(W)put the tunic on him, girded him with the sash, clothed him with the robe, and put the ephod on him; and he girded him with the intricately woven band of the ephod, and with it tied the ephod on him. ⁸ Then he put the breastplate on him, and he ^(X)put the ^[b]Urim and the Thummim in the breastplate. ^9 (Y)And he put the turban on his head. Also on the turban, on its front, he put the golden plate, the holy crown, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

^10 (Z)Also Moses took the anointing oil, and anointed the tabernacle and all that was in it, and consecrated them. ¹¹ He sprinkled some of it on the altar seven times, anointed the altar and all its utensils, and the laver and its base, to ^[c]consecrate them. ¹² And he ^(AA)poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed him, to consecrate him.

^13 (AB)Then Moses brought Aaron’s sons and put tunics on them, girded them with sashes, and put ^[d]hats on them, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

^14 (AC)And he brought the bull for the sin offering. Then Aaron and his sons ^(AD)laid their hands on the head of the bull for the sin offering, ¹⁵ and Moses killed it. ^(AE)Then he took the blood, and put some on the horns of the altar all around with his finger, and purified the altar. And he poured the blood at the base of the altar, and consecrated it, to make ^[e]atonement for it. ^16 (AF)Then he took all the fat that was on the entrails, the fatty lobe attached to the liver, and the two kidneys with their fat, and Moses burned them on the altar. ¹⁷ But the bull, its hide, its flesh, and its offal, he burned with fire outside the camp, as the Lord ^(AG)had commanded Moses.

^18 (AH)Then he brought the ram as the burnt offering. And Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram, ¹⁹ and Moses killed it. Then he sprinkled the blood all around on the altar. ²⁰ And he cut the ram into pieces; and Moses ^(AI)burned the head, the pieces, and the fat. ²¹ Then he washed the entrails and the legs in water. And Moses burned the whole ram on the altar. It was a burnt sacrifice for a ^[f]sweet aroma, an offering made by fire to the Lord, ^(AJ)as the Lord had commanded Moses.

²² And ^(AK)he brought the second ram, the ram of consecration. Then Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram, ²³ and Moses killed it. Also he took some of ^(AL)its blood and put it on the tip of Aaron’s right ear, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot. ²⁴ Then he brought Aaron’s sons. And Moses put some of the ^(AM)blood on the tips of their right ears, on the thumbs of their right hands, and on the big toes of their right feet. And Moses sprinkled the blood all around on the altar. ^25 (AN)Then he took the fat and the fat tail, all the fat that was on the entrails, the fatty lobe attached to the liver, the two kidneys and their fat, and the right thigh; ^26 (AO)and from the basket of unleavened bread that was before the Lord he took one unleavened cake, a cake of bread anointed with oil, and one wafer, and put them on the fat and on the right thigh; ²⁷ and he put all these ^(AP)in Aaron’s hands and in his sons’ hands, and waved them as a wave offering before the Lord. ^28 (AQ)Then Moses took them from their hands and burned them on the altar, on the burnt offering. They were consecration offerings for a sweet aroma. That was an offering made by fire to the Lord. ²⁹ And ^(AR)Moses took the ^(AS)breast and waved it as a wave offering before the Lord. It was Moses’ ^(AT)part of the ram of consecration, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

³⁰ Then ^(AU)Moses took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood which was on the altar, and sprinkled it on Aaron, on his garments, on his sons, and on the garments of his sons with him; and he consecrated Aaron, his garments, his sons, and the garments of his sons with him.

³¹ And Moses said to Aaron and his sons, ^(AV)“Boil the flesh at the door of the tabernacle of meeting, and eat it there with the bread that is in the basket of consecration offerings, as I commanded, saying, ‘Aaron and his sons shall eat it.’ ^32 (AW)What remains of the flesh and of the bread you shall burn with fire. ³³ And you shall not go outside the door of the tabernacle of meeting for seven days, until the days of your consecration are ended. For ^(AX)seven days he shall consecrate you. ^34 (AY)As he has done this day, so the Lord has commanded to do, to make atonement for you. ³⁵ Therefore you shall stay at the door of the tabernacle of meeting day and night for seven days, and ^(AZ)keep the ^[g]charge of the Lord, so that you may not die; for so I have been commanded.” ³⁶ So Aaron and his sons did all the things that the Lord had commanded by the hand of Moses.

The Priestly Ministry Begins

9 It came to pass on the ^(BA)eighth day that Moses called Aaron and his sons and the elders of Israel. ² And he said to Aaron, “Take for yourself a young ^(BB)bull as a sin offering and a ram as a burnt offering, without blemish, and offer them before the Lord. ³ And to the children of Israel you shall speak, saying, ^(BC)‘Take a kid of the goats as a sin offering, and a calf and a lamb, both of the first year, without blemish, as a burnt offering, ⁴ also a bull and a ram as peace offerings, to sacrifice before the Lord, and ^(BD)a grain offering mixed with oil; for ^(BE)today the Lord will appear to you.’ ”

⁵ So they brought what Moses commanded before the tabernacle of meeting. And all the congregation drew near and stood ^[h]before the Lord. ⁶ Then Moses said, “This is the thing which the Lord commanded you to do, and the glory of the Lord will appear to you.”

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers Send for Him^(A)

^31 (B)Then His brothers and His mother came, and standing outside they sent to Him, calling Him. ³² And a multitude was sitting around Him; and they said to Him, “Look, Your mother and Your brothers ^[a]are outside seeking You.”

³³ But He answered them, saying, “Who is My mother, or My brothers?” ³⁴ And He looked around in a circle at those who sat about Him, and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! ³⁵ For whoever does the ^(C)will of God is My brother and My sister and mother.”

The Parable of the Sower^(D)

4 And ^(E)again He began to teach by the sea. And a great multitude was gathered to Him, so that He got into a boat and sat in it on the sea; and the whole multitude was on the land facing the sea. ² Then He taught them many things by parables, ^(F)and said to them in His teaching:

³ “Listen! Behold, a sower went out to sow. ⁴ And it happened, as he sowed, that some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds ^[b]of the air came and devoured it. ⁵ Some fell on stony ground, where it did not have much earth; and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of earth. ⁶ But when the sun was up it was scorched, and because it had no root it withered away. ⁷ And some seed fell among thorns; and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no ^[c]crop. ⁸ But other seed fell on good ground and yielded a crop that sprang up, increased and produced: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.”

⁹ And He said ^[d]to them, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”

The Purpose of Parables^(G)

^10 (H)But when He was alone, those around Him with the twelve asked Him about the parable. ¹¹ And He said to them, “To you it has been given to ^(I)know the ^[e]mystery of the kingdom of God; but to ^(J)those who are outside, all things come in parables, ¹² so that

The Parable of the Sower Explained^(L)

¹³ And He said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables? ^14 (M)The sower sows the word. ¹⁵ And these are the ones by the wayside where the word is sown. When they hear, Satan comes immediately and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts. ¹⁶ These likewise are the ones sown on stony ground who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with gladness; ¹⁷ and they have no root in themselves, and so endure only for a time. Afterward, when tribulation or persecution arises for the word’s sake, immediately they stumble. ¹⁸ Now these are the ones sown among thorns; they are the ones who hear the word, ¹⁹ and the ^(N)cares of this world, ^(O)the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. ²⁰ But these are the ones sown on good ground, those who hear the word, ^[f]accept it, and bear ^(P)fruit: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.”

Light Under a Basket^(Q)

^21 (R)Also He said to them, “Is a lamp brought to be put under a basket or under a bed? Is it not to be set on a lampstand? ^22 (S)For there is nothing hidden which will not be revealed, nor has anything been kept secret but that it should come to light. ^23 (T)If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.”

²⁴ Then He said to them, “Take heed what you hear. ^(U)With the same measure you use, it will be measured to you; and to you who hear, more will be given. ^25 (V)For whoever has, to him more will be given; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.”
