And a sword will pierce through your own soul also—that the secret thoughts and purposes of many hearts may be brought out and disclosed.

and you, Mary, will suffer as though you had been stabbed by a dagger. But all this will show what people are really thinking.”

And thy own soul a sword shall pierce, that, out of many hearts, thoughts may be revealed.
So the secret thoughts of many will be made known. And the things that happen will be painful for you—like a sword cutting through your heart.”
This will show their secret thoughts about God. This will make you very sad, too. It will seem like a sharp knife is cutting into you. That is how sad you will be’.

The child’s father and mother were still amazed at what was said about him, when Simeon gave them his blessing. He said to Mary, the child’s mother, “This child is destined to make many fall and many rise in Israel and to set up a standard which many will attack—for he will expose the secret thoughts of many hearts. And for you ... your very soul will be pierced by a sword.”

Simeon blessed them but then said to Mary, “A sword shall pierce your soul, for this child shall be rejected by many in Israel, and this to their undoing. But he will be the greatest joy of many others. And the deepest thoughts of many hearts shall be revealed.”
Jesus’ father and mother were speechless with surprise at these words. Simeon went on to bless them, and said to Mary his mother, This child marks both the failure and the recovery of many in Israel, A figure misunderstood and contradicted— the pain of a sword-thrust through you— But the rejection will force honesty, as God reveals who they really are.
