This is the water of Meribah [that is, Strife], because the children of Israel strove with the Lord, and He was sanctified in them.

The Israelites had complained against the Lord, and he had shown them his holy power by giving them water to drink. So they named the place Meribah, which means “Complaining.”
These are the waters of Meribah, where the children of Israel contended with Jehovah, and he hallowed himself in them.
This is the Water of contradiction, where the children of Israel strove with words against the Lord, and he was sanctified in them.
This place was called the waters of Meribah. This is where the Israelites argued with the Lord and where he showed them that he was holy.
The place where this happened was called ‘Meribah’, because the Israelites quarrelled with the Lord there. But he showed them there that he was their holy God.

Because at this spot the Israelites rebelled against the Eternal and the display of His holiness, the water here is called Meribah, which means “rebellion.”

This is the water of against-saying; there the sons of Israel strived against the Lord, and he was hallowed in them. (This is the water of Meribah; there the Israelites complained against the Lord, but he was still holy before them.)
