Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Thy lovingkindness; according unto the multitude of Thy tender mercies, blot out my transgressions.

Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your steadfast love; according to the multitude of Your tender mercy and loving-kindness blot out my transgressions.

To the director: A song of David written when Nathan the prophet came to him after David’s sin with Bathsheba. God, be merciful to me because of your faithful love. Because of your great compassion, erase all the wrongs I have done.
David wrote this psalm for the music leader. It was when the prophet Nathan came to him, after David had sex with Bathsheba. Please forgive me, God, because of your faithful love. Because you are so kind, please clean away my sins.
Be gracious to me, God, according to your mercy. Erase my acts of rebellion according to the greatness of your compassion.

When David was rebuked by the Prophet Nathan for his great offenses, he did not only acknowledge the same to God, with protestation of his natural corruption and iniquity, but also left a memorial thereof to his posterity. 7 Therefore first he desireth God to forgive his sins, 10 And to renew in him his holy Spirit. 13 With promise that he will not be unmindful of those great graces. 18 Finally, fearing lest God would punish the whole Church for his fault, he requireth that he would rather increase his graces toward the same. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy loving-kindness: according to the multitude of thy compassions put away mine iniquities.

Be merciful to me, O God, because of your constant love. Because of your great mercy wipe away my sins!

Written after Nathan the prophet had come to inform David of God’s judgment against him because of his adultery with Bathsheba, and his murder of Uriah, her husband. O loving and kind God, have mercy. Have pity upon me and take away the awful stain of my transgressions.
Generous in love—God, give grace! Huge in mercy—wipe out my bad record. Scrub away my guilt, soak out my sins in your laundry. I know how bad I’ve been; my sins are staring me down.
