  2. A Promise of Restoration

    But in that day, the branch of the Lord will be beautiful and glorious; the fruit of the land will be the pride and glory of all who survive in Israel.

  11. Restoration for Israel

    Go home, my people, and lock your doors! Hide yourselves for a little while until the Lord’s anger has passed.
  12. God has told his people, “Here is a place of rest; let the weary rest here. This is a place of quiet rest.” But they would not listen.
  13. This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: “Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quietness and confidence is your strength. But you would have none of it.
  14. My people will live in safety, quietly at home. They will be at rest.
  15. Desert animals will mingle there with hyenas, their howls filling the night. Wild goats will bleat at one another among the ruins, and night creatures will come there to rest.
  16. Hope for Restoration

    Even the wilderness and desert will be glad in those days. The wasteland will rejoice and blossom with spring crocuses.
  17. I said, “In the prime of my life, must I now enter the place of the dead? Am I to be robbed of the rest of my years?”
  18. Lord, your discipline is good, for it leads to life and health. You restore my health and allow me to live!
  19. He will say, “I have long been silent; yes, I have restrained myself. But now, like a woman in labor, I will cry and groan and pant.
  20. Then he uses part of the wood to make a fire. With it he warms himself and bakes his bread. Then—yes, it’s true—he takes the rest of it and makes himself a god to worship! He makes an idol and bows down in front of it!
  21. The person who made the idol never stops to reflect, “Why, it’s just a block of wood! I burned half of it for heat and used it to bake my bread and roast my meat. How can the rest of it be a god? Should I bow down to worship a piece of wood?”
  22. Restoration for Jerusalem

    “Pay attention, O Jacob, for you are my servant, O Israel. I, the Lord, made you, and I will not forget you.
  23. But I carry out the predictions of my prophets! By them I say to Jerusalem, ‘People will live here again,’ and to the towns of Judah, ‘You will be rebuilt; I will restore all your ruins!’
  24. When I say of Cyrus, ‘He is my shepherd,’ he will certainly do as I say. He will command, ‘Rebuild Jerusalem’; he will say, ‘Restore the Temple.’”
  25. I will raise up Cyrus to fulfill my righteous purpose, and I will guide his actions. He will restore my city and free my captive people— without seeking a reward! I, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, have spoken!”
