Mine answer to those who examine me is this:
My defence to them that examine me is this.
This is my defense to those who would put me on trial and interrogate me [concerning my authority as an apostle]:
This is my [real ground of] defense (my vindication of myself) to those who would put me on trial and cross-examine me.
Mine answer to them that do examine me is this,

This is my defense against those who criticize me.
That is my defense when people put me under examination.
When people question me, I tell them
My defence to those who examine me is this:
this is my defense to the ones examining me!
My defence with them that do examine me is this.
Some people want to judge me. So this is the answer I give them:
Some people do not like what I do. This is my answer to what they say against me:
This is my defense to those who examine me.
This is my defense to those who would examine me.
This is my defence to those who would examine me.
This is the answer I give people who want to ·judge me [examine me; question my credentials]:
My defense to him that examine me, is this,
This is how I defend myself to those who cross-examine me.

Some people want to judge me. So this is the answer I give them:
This is my defense to those who would examine me:
Is there any doubt that I am a genuine messenger, any doubt that I am a free man? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord with my own eyes? Are not you yourselves samples of my work for the Lord? Even if other people should refuse to recognise my divine commission, yet to you at any rate I shall always be a true messenger, for you are a living proof of God’s call to me. This is my real ground of defence to those who cross-examine me.

This is my answer to those who question my rights.
I’m not shy in standing up to my critics. We who are on missionary assignments for God have a right to decent accommodations, and we have a right to support for us and our families. You don’t seem to have raised questions with the other apostles and our Master’s brothers and Peter in these matters. So, why me? Is it just Barnabas and I who have to go it alone and pay our own way? Are soldiers self-employed? Are gardeners forbidden to eat vegetables from their own gardens? Don’t dairy farmers get to drink their fill from the pail?
This is my answer to those who examine me.
