“Have you not heard [says the God of Israel] That I did it long ago, That I planned it in ancient times? Now I have brought it to pass, That you [king of Assyria] would [be My instrument to] turn fortified cities into ruinous heaps.
[But, says the God of Israel] have you not heard that I purposed to do it long ago, that I planned it in ancient times? Now I have brought it to pass, that you [king of Assyria] should [be My instrument to] lay waste fortified cities, making them ruinous heaps.
Sennacherib, now listen to me, the Lord. I planned all of this long ago. And you don’t even know that I alone am the one who decided that you would do these things. I let you make ruins of fortified cities.
Hast thou not heard what I have done to him of old? from the days of old I have formed it: and now I have brought it to effect: and it hath come to pass that hills fighting together, and fenced cities should be destroyed.
‘How could you say this, Sennacherib? Did no one ever tell you that I, the Lord, planned these things long ago? From ancient times I decided what would happen. And now I have made it happen. I let you tear down strong cities and change them into piles of rocks.
“‘King of Assyria, ·surely you have [L have you not…?] heard. Long ago I, the Lord, ·planned [determined; ordained] these things. ·Long ago [In ancient times/days of old] I ·designed them [planned it], and now I have ·made them happen [brought them to pass]. I allowed you to turn those ·strong, walled [fortified] cities into piles of ·rocks [rubble; ruins].
“‘King of Assyria, surely you have heard. Long ago I, the Lord, planned these things. Long ago I planned them. Now I have made them happen. I allowed you to turn those strong, walled cities into piles of rocks.
Have you not heard from a long time ago? I have made it from days of primeval time, and I formed it. Now I have brought it about, and it is for fortified cities to collapse into heaps of destroyed stones.
But do you not yet know that it was I who decided all this long ago? That it was I who gave you all this power from ancient times? I have caused all this to happen as I planned—that you should crush walled cities into ruined heaps.
“‘Haven’t you gotten the news that I’ve been behind this all along? This is a longstanding plan of mine and I’m just now making it happen, using you to devastate strong cities, turning them into piles of rubble and leaving their citizens helpless, bewildered, and confused, drooping like unwatered plants, stunted like withered seedlings.
“‘King of Assyria, surely you have heard. Long ago I, the Lord, planned these things. Long ago I designed them, and now I have made them happen. I allowed you to turn those strong, walled cities into piles of rocks.
“ ‘ “But I, the Lord, say, ‘Haven’t you heard what I have done? Long ago I arranged for you to do this. In days of old I planned it. Now I have made it happen. You have turned cities with high walls into piles of stone.
Hast thou not heard long ago, how I have done it; and of yemei kedem (days of old), that I have formed it? Now have I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay waste fortified cities into ruinous heaps.
Ah, Sennacherib, haven’t you heard, don’t you know that long before you arrived, way back in ancient days, I determined all of this? I charted this course long ago, and now I bring it to pass. This is the reason why you turn well-fortified cities into heaps of rubble.
Whether thou, Sennacherib, heardest not what things I did sometime? From eld days I formed that thing, and now I have brought (it to pass); and it is made into the drawing up by the root of (the) little hills fighting together, and of strong cities (In the old days, I formed that thing, and now I have brought it to pass; yea, bringing down strengthened cities into heaps of rubble).
