You are the hope of Israel, its savior in times of trouble. Why are you like a stranger in the land, like a tourist spending only the night?
You, hope of Isra’el, its savior in time of trouble, why should you be like a stranger in the land, like a traveler turning aside for the night?
You're our only hope; you alone can save us now. You help us one day, but you're gone the next.

O expectation of Israel, the Saviour thereof in time of trouble: why wilt thou be a stranger in the land, and as a wayfaring man turning in to lodge?
God, you are the hope of Israel! You save Israel in times of trouble. But now it seems like you are a stranger in the land, like a traveler who only stays one night.
You are the one that we Israelites hope to give us help. You are the one who saves us when we are in trouble. But now you live among us like a foreigner. You are like a visitor who stays for only one night.

O Hope of Israel, our Savior in times of trouble, why are you as a stranger to us, as one passing through the land who is merely stopping for the night?
We know we’re guilty. We’ve lived bad lives— but do something, God. Do it for your sake! Time and time again we’ve betrayed you. No doubt about it—we’ve sinned against you. Hope of Israel! Our only hope! Israel’s last chance in this trouble! Why are you acting like a tourist, taking in the sights, here today and gone tomorrow? Why do you just stand there and stare, like someone who doesn’t know what to do in a crisis? But God, you are, in fact, here, here with us! You know who we are—you named us! Don’t leave us without a leg to stand on.
