By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down; yea, we wept when we remembered Zion.

I will praise thee, O lord, with my whole heart: for thou hast heard the words of my mouth. I will sing praise to thee in the sight of his angels:
We sat by the rivers in Babylon and cried as we remembered Zion.
When we sat down beside the rivers in Babylon, we were very upset. We thought about Zion city that we had left behind, and we wept.
Beside the rivers of Babylon, there we sat, and, yes, we wept as we remembered Zion.
By the waters of Babylon, there we sat down and wept, when we remembered Zion.

1 The people of God in their banishment seeing God’s true Religion decay, lived in great anguish and sorrow of heart: the which grief the Chaldeans did so little pity, 3 That they rather increased the same daily with taunts, reproaches and blasphemies against God. 7 Wherefore the Israelites desire God, first to punish the Edomites, who provoked the Babylonians against them, 8 And moved by the Spirit of God, prophesy the destruction of Babylon, where they were handled so tyrannously. By the rivers of Babel we sat, and there we wept, when we remembered Zion.

Alongside Babylon’s rivers we sat on the banks; we cried and cried, remembering the good old days in Zion. Alongside the quaking aspens we stacked our unplayed harps; That’s where our captors demanded songs, sarcastic and mocking: “Sing us a happy Zion song!”
