History of the New Thai Version (NTV)

In 1989 the leaders of the NTV team were riding in a taxi through the crowded streets of Bangkok. As usual the traffic was clogged to a standstill in the blistering heat of the famous city. The taxi driver began to vent his frustration with his current state of affairs. His economic and family situation seemed almost hopeless. We told him the good news of the salvation that comes through Jesus. He was deeply touched and as we were leaving we wished we could give him an accurate and readable Bible that he could understand. This was the genesis of our 30 year Bible translation project. The New Thai Version is a Bible that is done by biblical scholars and is both accurate and highly readable in language that Thai people can understand. It is a great Bible for the serious Bible student and also for someone who has never read the Bible before.

The first copies of the NTV came out in the early 1990s and it was then known as “Su Itsara” or “Into Freedom” (taken from the last words of Luke 4:18). Tens of thousands of copies were distributed throughout Thailand by organizations such as Campus Crusade For Christ and Youth With A Mission. At first we published just Luke and Acts and then later Luke, Acts, and John. OMF Publishing (Kanok Bannasan) in Bangkok did all the printing and distribution for our new translation.

In the year 1998 the New Testament was completed by the NTV team and again Kanok Bannasan did the printing and distribution of what was then called the New Thai Translation Version (NTTV). Many churches throughout Thailand used the translation and it became known for its accuracy, clarity, and smoothness of speech. It was popular on university campuses and was widely distributed among people reading the Bible for the first time. It was also used in Bible schools throughout Thailand.

By the year 2012 the name was changed to the New Thai Version (NTV) and now Genesis, Psalms, and Proverbs were added to the New Testament. Some prominent Thai pastors and Bible teachers used our translation. Throughout those years the NTV team continued to revise and improve the translation. Highly educated theologians and editors worked to polish the flow and clarity of the NTV. Throughout these 30 years the New Testament has gone through multiple revisions and the Old Testament has as well. This has been a predominantly Thai project from the beginning because we wanted the NTV to touch the hearts of the Thai people.

Now in early 2021 the whole New Thai Version (NTV) is complete and is available digitally on YouVersion and Bible Gateway. The printed edition will be available soon. Readers will be impressed by the accuracy, consistency, and clarity of the text. Our goal has always been to create a Thai translation of the complete Bible that will have a positive impact on our beloved nation of Thailand for hundreds of years.

Foundation History and Goals

In the year 2020 a Foundation was formed to hold the copyright and facilitate distribution of the NTV throughout Thailand. Our name is the New Thai Version Foundation. Our goal is to get as many Thai people as possible to read and learn from the Bible. The Bible contains the wisdom from God that has been passed on to his people for over 4000 years. We want as many people as possible to come to know the loving God of the Bible. The NTV team plans to distribute the NTV in multiply formats throughout Thailand. We will work with churches, schools, and mission organizations in doing mass distributions in the coming years.

Although the NTV is very popular among young people it is also readily understandable by the elderly. The founders of the NTV have owned a business that cares for the elderly for many years and we also plan to format projects that help the elderly in Thailand. We want to distribute Bibles to them, but we also want to help the elderly poor. Thailand has a very fast growing elderly population and we want to help elevate some of the suffering of the elderly poor.

The primary goal of the New Thai Version Foundation, however, will be our NTV Bible. The other Thai translations available in Thailand were predominately done from one English translation each. The NTV has not followed this model, but has relied heavily on the original biblical languages for research and precision. The NTV is truly a new Bible translation for Thailand!

Translation Method

The NTV team has always worked from the motto “as literal as possible and as free as necessary.”

This motto can be summarized in three underlining principles:

1. Give a good representation of the sense of the original texts and do not deviate from them.
2. Convey as much as possible of the author’s spirit and manner through the careful selection of language.
3. The translation should appear natural and flow easily to reflect the flow of the original.

The original authors of the Bible wrote in clear natural language that people could understand. They used words, phrases, and sentences that were easily understandable by both common and educated people. The Bible is for all peoples regardless of their background and the NTV has used language that flows naturally, yet accurately reflects what the original authors of the Bible were trying to say. We tried to use consistent words and phrases throughout the whole translation. This in many ways is unique for Thailand. The translation team carefully researched in both Hebrew and Greek (the original languages of the Old and New Testaments) to find appropriate Thai words that accurately reflected the original authors intent. Biblical names and places have been consistently spelled and usually following the Hebrew and Greek pronunciations. For example, the English word “Hittites” is translated from English directly in other Thai versions of the Bible, but the NTV did not follow the English word which means, in English, “the Hitt people.” Our translation calls them “the Hitt people” in Thai. We left the English “ites” off. We have also tried to be very careful with parallel passages in the Bible. Some verses are exactly the same in various books of the Bible and we have kept them the same as they appear in various locations. Also, some verses are quite similar in different books and we have reflected that as well.

We have avoided what many call “looseness” in our translation. We have not added words unnecessarily and have made every effort to stay close to the original text with a consistent stress on accuracy. There has also been a constant stress between form and meaning. At times we have had to change the form slightly to reflect an accurate meaning in Thai. At times a literal translation would be totally meaningless in Thai so we have had to make minor alterations so the Thai reader understands what the original author was trying to say.

The Hebrew Old Testament has a special word for God that is used over 5500 times and is known as the Tetragrammaton. It consists of 4 Hebrew consonants (YHWH). No one is certain how it is pronounced because when the original authors of the Hebrew Bible wrote they did not use vowels. They knew how to pronounce a word because of oral tradition. There is no oral tradition for pronouncing YHWH. When translators added vowels to the Hebrew Bible thousands of years later they substituted the vowels of Adonai (My Lord) into the word YHWH because they did not want to accidentally pronounce the sacred name of God. The translators of the NTV have followed the English language tradition and have used the same word for Adonai and YHWH (พระผู้เป็นเจ้า) and made YHWH in italics to differentiate it from Adonai.

Finally, our hope is that you will enjoy reading the New Thai Version. Serious students will understand the great care that has gone into this accurate and readable translation. You will experience the joy of reading the Bible without having to depend on someone else telling you what the meaning is. The meaning will be clear to you. It will be available at Kanok Bannasan and bookstores around Thailand.

ประวัติของ NTV

เริ่มจากปี ค.ศ. 1989 ผู้ก่อตั้งฉบับ NTV (ฉบับแปลใหม่) ได้มีโอกาสสนทนากับคนขับแท๊กซี่เป็นเวลานาน การสันจรในกรุงเทพติดขัดทุกวัน ประกอบกับความร้อนระอุจากยานพาหนะในเมืองที่แออัด คนขับรถเริ่มระบายความรู้สึกที่ได้อดกลั้นอยู่ในใจ ถึงเรื่องราวส่วนตัวในเวลานั้น วิถีชีวิตและครอบครัวของเขาซึ่งดูเหมือนจะสิ้นหวัง เราบอกให้เขาทราบถึงข่าวประเสริฐของความรอดพ้นที่มนุษย์ทุกคนจะรับได้โดยผ่านพระเยซู เขาแสดงความซาบซึ้งด้วยใจจริงที่ว่า มีผู้ที่รักและห่วงใยเขามากถึงขนาดสิ้นชีวิตให้เขาด้วย นี่เป็นครั้งแรกที่เขาเคยได้ยิน เรารู้สึกเสียดายที่ไม่มีพระคัมภีร์ให้เขาศึกษาเพิ่มเติมเกี่ยวกับพระเจ้า เหตุการณ์อย่างเดียวกันนี้ได้เกิดขึ้นอีกบ่อยครั้ง ซึ่งเป็นแรงกระตุ้นให้เราแปลพระคัมภีร์เป็นภาษาที่เข้าใจง่าย

NTV เป็นพระคัมภีร์ที่จัดทำขึ้นโดยบัณฑิตที่มีความรู้แขนงพระคัมภีร์โดยเฉพาะ ฉบับที่แปลจึงได้ใจความที่ตรงตามความหมาย ซึ่งเป็นประโยชน์มากสำหรับผู้ที่ต้องการศึกษาพระคัมภีร์อย่างถ่องแท้และสำหรับผู้ที่ไม่เคยอ่านพระคัมภีร์มาก่อน

ในปี ค.ศ. 1991 NTV เริ่มพิมพ์ฉบับลูกาและกิจการของอัครทูต ในนามว่า “สู่อิสระ” (ลูกา 4:18) จำนวนหลายหมื่นฉบับเพื่อแจกให้แก่ผู้สนใจโดยผ่านองค์การต่างๆ อาทิเช่น Campus Crusade for Christ และ Youth with A Mission ต่อมา NTV ได้พิมพ์ฉบับลูกา กิจการของอัครทูต และยอห์น รวมจำนวนที่พิมพ์แจกได้หลายหมื่นเล่ม กนกบรรณสารจัดพิมพ์ ทั้งแจกและจำหน่าย ในปี ค.ศ. 1998 กนกบรรณสารได้จัดพิมพ์และจำหน่ายพันธสัญญาใหม่ฉบับบริบูรณ์ ในนามว่า NTTV คริสตจักรหลายแห่งในประเทศไทยและต่างประเทศใช้ฉบับ NTTV และเป็นที่กล่าวกันว่า “ฉบับนี้อ่านแล้วเข้าใจง่าย” จึงเป็นที่นิยมของผู้อ่านทั้งในระดับมหาวิทยาลัยและโรงเรียนสอนพระคัมภีร์หลายแห่งในประเทศ

เนื่องจากมีคนจำนวนไม่น้อยได้แสดงความสนใจที่จะอ่านพันธสัญญาเดิมของ NTTV รวมทั้งครูสอนพระคัมภีร์และศิษยาภิบาลบางท่านผู้เป็นที่นับถือในวงการคริสเตียน ในปี ค.ศ. 2012 เราจึงให้มีการจัดพิมพ์พันธสัญญาใหม่อีกครั้งโดยเพิ่มฉบับปฐมกาล สดุดี และสุภาษิต ในปีนี้ชื่อฉบับเปลี่ยนจาก NTTV เป็น NTV (ฉบับแปลใหม่)

นักศาสนศาสตร์และบรรณาธิการของคณะ NTV ได้ใช้เวลาหลายปีร่วมมือกันแก้ไขและยกร่างพันธสัญญาใหม่ ประกอบกับการแปลฉบับที่เหลือทั้งหมดในพันธสัญญาเดิม ทางคณะได้ปรับภาษาให้ทันกับยุคปัจจุบันและปรับบางจุดให้ได้ใจความชัดเจนยิ่งขึ้น นับว่าโครงการนี้มีปัจจัยสำคัญๆ ในการผลิตเพื่อให้ได้ผลงานที่ดีที่สุดสำหรับคนไทย เพราะเป้าหมายของเราคือ ต้องการให้ NTV สัมผัสส่วนลึกของจิตใจของคนไทยอันเป็นที่รักของเราต่อไปอีกเป็นเวลานับร้อยๆ ปี คณะผู้แปลพระคัมภีร์ฉบับแปลใหม่ได้แปลพันธสัญญาเดิมเสร็จบริบูรณ์ในครึ่งหลังของปี 2020 ฉะนั้นผู้สนใจอ่านพระคัมภีร์จะศึกษาได้ในรูปหนังสือ หรือดาวน์โหลดได้ทั้ง YouVersion และ Bible Gateway ผู้อ่านจะเห็นว่า ฉบับนี้มีข้อความชัดเจนเพราะเป็นภาษาที่เข้าใจง่าย การใช้คำสม่ำเสมออย่างรัดกุม และมีใจความตรงตามความหมายของผู้บันทึกเหตุการณ์ตามประวัติศาสตร์

ประวัติของมูลนิธิและเป้าหมาย

ในปี ค.ศ. 2020 มูลนิธิถูกตั้งขึ้นในนาม มูลนิธิฉบับแปลใหม่ NTV เป็นที่นิยมในหมู่เยาวชน และอ่านเข้าใจได้ง่ายสำหรับผู้สูงวัยด้วย เราตั้งใจให้คนไทยมีโอกาสได้อ่านและเรียนรู้จากพระคัมภีร์ พระคัมภีร์อุดมด้วยสติปัญญาซึ่งถูกถ่ายทอดให้แก่คนของพระองค์นานกว่า 4,000 ปีมาแล้ว เราต้องการให้คนจำนวนมากที่สุดเท่าที่จะมากได้มารู้จักพระเจ้าของพระคัมภีร์ผู้เปี่ยมด้วยความรัก เป้าหมายแรกของมูลนิธิคือ เน้นโครงการพระคัมภีร์ฉบับแปลใหม่ คณะ NTV ประสงค์ที่จะแจกพระคัมภีร์ในหลายรูปแบบทั่วประเทศไทย โดยการประสานงานกับคริสตจักร โรงเรียน และองค์การศาสนาต่างๆ ประเทศไทยมีประชากรที่สูงวัยเพิ่มจำนวนมากขึ้นเรื่อยๆ ผู้ก่อตั้ง NTV ทำธุระกิจเกี่ยวกับการดูแลคนชรามาเป็นเวลาหลายปี และมีโครงการที่จะช่วยบรรเทาความทุกข์ยากของคนชราในประเทศไทย ซึ่งเป็นเป้าหมายที่สอง

พระคัมภีร์ฉบับอื่นๆ แต่ละฉบับที่มีในประเทศไทย ได้แปลจากฉบับภาษาอังกฤษของแต่ละ version โดยเฉพาะ NTV ไม่ได้แปลตามรูปแบบนั้น แต่เรายึดเอาภาษาฮีบรูและภาษากรีกซึ่งเป็นภาษาต้นฉบับเป็นหลักในการตีความหมายจากการค้นคว้าคำเฉพาะ และให้ได้ความหมายแน่นอนที่สุด ไม่ต้องการให้ผิดพลาด NTV จึงเป็นพระคัมภีร์ที่แปลขึ้นใหม่อย่างแท้จริงสำหรับประเทศไทย

วิธีของการแปล

คณะ NTV มีคติพจน์ของการแปลคือ “ให้ได้ความหมายตรงกับคำศัพท์เท่าที่จะทำได้ และมีเสรีตีความหมายได้เมื่อจำเป็น” คติพจน์นี้อาจสรุปด้วยการเน้นหลักสำคัญ 3 ประการคือ

1. ให้ได้ความรู้สึกในข้อความของต้นฉบับอย่างชัดเจน และไม่เบี่ยงเบนไปจากนั้น
2. สื่อให้ทราบถึงความตั้งใจในส่วนลึกๆ ของผู้เขียนด้วยการเลือกคำที่เหมาะสม
3. แปลให้ได้ข้อความที่ลื่นไหลเพื่อสะท้อนถึงความรู้สึกของภาษาต้นฉบับ

บรรดาผู้บันทึกพระคัมภีร์ของต้นฉบับได้บันทึกด้วยภาษาที่ชัดเจน เป็นภาษาที่ผู้มีการศึกษาระดับสูงและคนสามัญเข้าใจได้โดยง่าย พระคัมภีร์มีไว้ให้ชนทุกชาติ ไม่ว่าจะมีพื้นเพมาจากไหนก็ตาม คณะผู้แปลได้ศึกษาค้นคว้าความหมายของคำศัพท์ด้วยความระมัดระวังทั้งในภาษาฮีบรูและภาษากรีก (คือภาษาต้นฉบับของพันธสัญญาเดิมและพันธสัญญาใหม่) เพื่อให้ได้ศัพท์ที่เหมาะสมและได้ความหมายอย่างที่บรรดาผู้บันทึกตั้งใจไว้ การสะกดชื่อเฉพาะในพันธสัญญาเดิมและพันธสัญญาใหม่เป็นไปอย่างสม่ำเสมอเมื่อเป็นคนเดียวกันหรือสถานที่เดียวกัน ตัวอย่างเช่น คำว่า “Hittites” ในภาษาอังกฤษ ถ้าแปลคำนี้ตรงตัวว่า “คนฮิตไทต์” ก็จะไม่ถูกต้อง เพราะความจริงแล้ว ชื่อที่ลงท้ายด้วย “ites” หมายถึง “ชาว” NTV จึงแปลชื่อนี้ว่า “ชาวฮิต” และคำว่า “Amorites” จึงเป็น “ชาวอาโมร์” บางข้อในพันธสัญญาเดิมมีข้อความเหมือนกับข้อในพันธสัญญาใหม่ เราก็แปลให้เหมือนกัน แต่ในบางกรณีถ้าดูเผินๆ แล้ว ข้อความคล้ายกันมาก แต่ความจริงแล้วไม่เหมือนกันทีเดียว เราจึงแปลให้ความตรงกับภาษาเดิม

เราระวังไม่ให้เกิดความหละหลวมในการแปล เราไม่เพิ่มเติมเสริมคำโดยไม่จำเป็น เราพยายามทุกวิถีทางเพื่อแปลให้ได้ความหมายใกล้เคียงและถูกต้องตามบริบท เราเน้นเรื่องความหมายมาก เรามีลีลาของภาษาเป็นเอกลักษณ์ของเรา และไม่ยึดหลักของการแปลตรงตัวให้เป็นคำต่อคำ เพราะแต่ละภาษาสื่อความเข้าใจได้ต่างกัน เราจึงต้องปรับคำเพื่อให้คนไทยเข้าใจสิ่งที่ผู้บันทึกต้องการให้ผู้อ่านเข้าใจ

พันธสัญญาเดิมที่เป็นภาษาฮีบรูใช้คำเฉพาะสำหรับ “พระผู้เป็นเจ้า” ซึ่งใช้มากกว่า 5,500 ครั้ง คำนั้นเรียกว่าเป็น Tetragrammaton คือคำที่มีอักษรสี่ตัว ׳הוה (พระผู้เป็นเจ้า) ไม่มีผู้ใดทราบแน่นอนว่า คำนี้ออกเสียงอย่างไร เพราะดั้งเดิมคนที่พูดภาษาฮีบรูทราบโดยอัตโนมัติว่าแต่ละคำควรออกเสียงอย่างไร โดยไม่ต้องมีสระกำกับ ผู้บันทึกต้นฉบับของพระคัมภีร์ภาษาฮีบรูจึงไม่ใช้สระกำกับคำว่า ׳הוה คำนี้ไม่มีการออกเสียงตามจารีตประเพณี เพราะว่าชาวฮีบรูไม่ต้องการออกเสียงพระนามอันบริสุทธิ์ของพระเจ้า เมื่อเวลาผ่านไปนับพันๆ ปีต่อมา บรรดาผู้แปลพระคัมภีร์ภาษาฮีบรูก็ได้เติมสระที่คำว่า ׳הוָה โดยใช้สระที่มาจากคำว่า אדנָ׳ (พระผู้เป็นเจ้าของข้าพเจ้า) ผู้แปลของคณะ NTV ได้ใช้คำว่า “พระผู้เป็นเจ้า” สำหรับคำว่า אדנָ׳ และใช้คำว่า “พระผู้เป็นเจ้า” สำหรับคำว่า ׳הוָה

เราหวังว่าจะเป็นพระพรแก่ทุกท่านที่ได้อ่านพระคัมภีร์ฉบับแปลใหม่ นักศึกษาที่จริงจังกับการอ่านพระคัมภีร์จะเข้าใจว่าฉบับแปลใหม่นี้ มีความระมัดระวังในเรื่องความหมายที่ถูกต้องและอ่านแล้วเข้าใจได้ง่าย ท่านจะอ่านพระคัมภีร์เองได้โดยไม่ต้องให้ใครอธิบายความหมายให้ท่านอีกต่อหนึ่ง เพราะมีความชัดเจนอยู่ในตัวแล้ว พระคัมภีร์ฉบับแปลใหม่จะหาได้ที่กนกบรรสารและตามร้านขายหนังสือทั่วไปในประเทศไทย
